Another 7 Astronauts, "The Golden Autumn & The Afternoon"
Begun as an experimental recording project by Louisville, Ky., drummer and percussionist J.C. Denison, Another7Astronauts quickly expanded into a large ensemble when opportunities for shows began to present themselves.
Musicians from some of Louisville’s favorite bands (Lucky Pineapple, Softcheque, Invaders, OK Deejays, 23-String Band, OK Kino, solo artist Cheyenne Mize, etc.) converged on the rooftop of GlassWorks, a nine-story glass blowing studio and art gallery, in September 2010 to perform as Another7Astronauts, finally giving life to early A7A sketches.
For the show, trombonist Dan Moore was recruited to help arrange and flesh out the tunes, and he and Denison have continued to work together as a writing team along with lyricist/vocalist Dane Waters.
In December 2010, the entire 15-plus piece ensemble recorded a full-length album with engineer Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, California Guitar Trio, Seluah). The Golden Autumn and the Afternoon is the result of this recording session that spanned three days and three floors of a funeral home.
Capturing the same energy presented on that first rooftop show, it is an album of playful minimalism woven with childlike melodies and Indian ragas coated with simple philosophical mantras, all presented on instruments, including toy pianos, steel drum, vibes, horns, violins, cello, voice, guitar and much more. A7A continues to play out as an ensemble with a constantly evolving sound and rotating lineup.
Work has already begun on a follow-up album, as well as production on several large-scale pieces to be performed in the near future.
